Remembering Maria Whelan

I remember hearing Maria speak and tell a story on herself. She had awoken early am to get up and downtown to the TV station to be interviewed by (as I recall?) a fledgling Oprah Winfrey. Feeling very pleased with herself, she finished her task and showed up at the office to hear colleagues say “did you appear on TV like that?” Dressing in the dark and in a rush, she had dressed (and appeared onscreen) with her clothes inside out. I was so impressed that she could share such self-deprecating humor, but I am sure at the same time, she killed that interview with clear chops as a passionate advocate, clothes notwithstanding. Her fierceness stays with me still. Peace to all who knew her and were impacted by her glorious life.
